Stelton are one of the older Scandinavian brands, brought together over 50 years ago in Denmark. Niels Stellan Høm and Carton Madelaire combined their names to create Stelton and they began the company as a simple trading business, with many different product types being tested but they really hit it off when they discovered the small factory of Danish Stainless.
Danish Stainless were a Danish brand who specialised in the production of stainless steel tableware which was extremely popular in 1960s Denmark. Once Stelton contacted they entered into an agreement where Stelton began to market a stainless steel gravy boat that was extremely popular, both in Denmark and beyond. Stelton became a market leader in Danish design in the United Kingdom, epitomising Danish design in the UK and making way for many other companies to attempt to offer the same style of products.
When Peter Holmblad joined the company in the early 1960s he revolutionised thinking within the company when it came to design and saw the need for Stelton to differentiate and with this a new design ethos and style was launched and Stelton moved forward into the more graphically stylish yet still quintessentially Danish pieces in their modern collection.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s Holmblad collaborated with Erik Magnussen to create a huge range of the recognisable Danish designs of the period. Things changed considerably at Stelton when Peter Holmblad made the decision to sell the company and it was bought up by Michael Ring in 2004, which saw new designers brought on board and a wider range of products to appeal to a wider range of interior design aficionados.
Stelton’s brand message is simple, they want to provide what they describe as “Surprising, innovative, best-in-class, high-quality Scandinavian design - the brand that tickles the design gene.” They follow this up with the bold aspiration to be the most innovative and trend setting design brand there is that bases its pieces on the Scandinavian design philosophy and they want to be the kind of brand that designers aspire to work for. They are a company who want to be your first choice and want you to want their products, before they’ve even been launched and they are wholeheartedly committed to luxury high-end designer products across many different areas of the home from cutlery sets to stylish candle holders.
Stelton has been the recipient of many awards, most recently a 2015 Red Dot Design Award for their Stockholm Aquatic collection, a 2015 Design Plus Award for the Freja pitcher, a 2015 IF Design Award for the THEO collection and a special mention at the German Design Awards for the Emma collection.
