An extremely well-loved brand in both the UK and worldwide over the past 26 years, Original BTC is renowned for its high-quality, designer lighting which boasts simple, clean lines mixed with unfussy design. In fact, much of the inspiration for the brand’s designs has come from European industrial heritage sources, particularly those of factories in 1930’s and 1940’s Britain.
Today similar iconic, modern lighting designs with a contemporary touch and impressive attention to detail can be found in the Paris’ Merci Store, The Design Centre in London and Gordon Ramsey’s Maze restaurant. Then there are all those countless other fashionable upmarket hotels, restaurants and airports around the world boasting stunning, contemporary lighting – and all thanks to Original BTC and its team of skilled craftsmen and designers. Founder and well-known designer Peter Bowles, 59, has been a name in the upmarket, designer lighting trade for several decades now, having been immersed in it as a child. His grandfather owned a famous Oxford furniture store which was later bought out by prestigious Parker Knoll, while his father ran lighting company Cosmo Designs and would employ his son to man the firm’s stall at Harrogate Lighting Fair. That family tradition of passing on through the generations continues to this day with Bowles’ own son Charlie having taken over as director of Original BTC four years ago. Bowles originally started his career in cutlery (he designed and manufactured it for 13 years) but wanted more of a challenge and opened Original BTC in his home town of Oxford in 1990. The rest, as they say, is history. The progress of the firm led to Bowles acquiring an additional two lighting brands under the Original BTC banner – Davey Lighting and Beadlight (which focuses on LED).
Original BTC is a very British company. All materials are sourced and manufactured in Britain while lighting is also designed on home turf. To date the company own six production outlets here in the UK. This includes a metal works in Birmingham, a glassworks, assembly plant in Oxford and, in Stoke-on-Trent, a bone china factory. Original BTC's contemporary lamps and lights are commonly produced from metals such as aluminium, copper, brass and plated nickel, as well as bone china. Bases tend to be chrome plated while the cables are produced from twisted cotton (an Original BTC signature element). Iconic, contemporary lamps designed and manufactured by the company include the Hector Pendant Lamp with its bone china shade, the Drop Pendant (with its cluster of bone china shades), the Titan Pendant Lamp (reminiscent of 1940s factory lighting) and the Phane Pendant (inspired by the Paris Metro). Although the company sell well in Britain and are popular amongst interior designers and upmarket commercial outfitters, around 70 per cent of their upmarket, designer lighting is actually exported abroad. A brand synonymous with quality and innovative design this very British company is both a name and a business model that start-ups and other long-established firms in the lighting sector aspire to.
