Making waves in the world of wallpaper since they came on the scene in 2010, NLXL is a Dutch company, set up by Rick and Esther Vintage.
With a passion for creating completely individual looks within interior spaces, NLXL takes inspiration from natural and manmade forms in their everyday environment and creates hyper-realistic wallpapers for contemporary rooms.
Their incredible designs are truly unique but what makes this design duo’s wallcoverings unusual is that none of them feature a pattern repeat. This makes for no waste and no fiddly measuring, which is music to any wallpaper-hanger’s ears! Additionally, this means that no two walls look exactly the same, which helps to maintain an individually styled look in your home.
One of their most famous designs, Scrapwood, which was produced in collaboration with Piet Hein Eek as NLXL’s inaugural collection, changed the wallpaper industry and became an overnight success in over 70 countries. In fact, its influence on interior design is so significant that the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum has added it, along with two of NLXL’s other designs, Archives and Remixed, to their permanent collection.
One of the ways that this Netherlands-based company makes such an impact with its wallpapers is its ability to reproduce everyday materials to such an exacting standard. After the success of Scrapwood in 2010, they then worked to reproduce marble on paper. This had been done by companies previously but it was never quite in the way that NLXL envisioned it so they produced their own, which is now available in five colourways. This print is particularly unusual because it’s available as the original design and its mirror image. This concept is taken directly from when you cut a slab of marble and flip it to get its mirror image or “bookmatch” when the two slabs are combined.
Other unusual, true-to-life wallpapers include Burnt Wood, made in collaboration with furniture designer Maarten Baas and Concrete, which is a collection of different concrete prints, designed by NLXL in collaboration with internationally acclaimed designer, Piet Boon. All of these wallpapers will help to bring a very unusual aesthetic to your home and can work well in modern or traditional settings to create an industrial or vintage look.
At Naken Interiors, we also stock the Brooklyn Tins collection of wallpaper by NLXL. This unique print is created in collaboration with retail outlet, MERCI and is inspired by the tin counter in MERCI’s Parisien store. Originally produced in the late 1800s and early 1900s in north America as an affordable alternative to decorative plaster ceilings seen across Europe, the antiqued tin ceilings are now immortalised in a high quality wallpaper collection by this game-changing Dutch brand.
